Message of the Chief Executive Officer

Advanced Research Institute of Inorganic Materials named after Academician A. A. Bochvar is one of the leading research centers and the primary organization of The State Atomic Energy Corporation ROSATOM in the field of materials science and nuclear fuel cycle technologies. The Institute is the same age as the nuclear industry, and has a rich history. Employees of NII-9, as VNIINM was called until the early 1970s, participated in the creation of the country's nuclear shield, its nuclear fleet, nuclear power engineering industry, and space technology. Modern nuclear fuel for nuclear power plants, icebreakers and submarines, as well as research reactors is produced at the enterprises of TVEL Fuel Company with the use of technologies developed by VNIINM.

As the recognition of the Institute’s achievements and prominent role in the development of nuclear science and technology it was awarded the status of the State Scientific Center of the Russian Federation.

The Institute's activities are aimed at promoting fundamental and applied research, fulfilling the state defense order, increasing the share of nuclear materials and technologies on the world market, safe and efficient production of electric and thermal energy at nuclear power plants, and ensuring safety in the use of nuclear energy.

Today, the Institute participates in essential industry projects, including:

Development of technologies for the production of TVS-KVADRAT nuclear fuel;

Development of beryllium plate production technologies for the International Experimental Thermonuclear Reactor ITER;

Development of manufacturing technology and research of structural materials for BREST-OD-300 and BN-1200 reactor cores;

Participation in the development of a fuel production module, a spent fuel reprocessing module, and RW conditioning technologies;

Development of fuel element design and manufacturing technology for mixed nitride fuel with high density, thermal conductivity and low heat capacity as part of the "Breakthrough" project;

Activities to maintain the uniformity of measurements as part of our services as the main scientific metrology center for State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom.

In addition to activities in the field of nuclear energy, the Institute is involved in solving a wide range of materials science problems. The non-nuclear component in VNIINM today includes up to a dozen technologies intended to solve the problem of import substitution. The Institute develops superconducting materials, composite nanomaterials, solutions based on nanoberyllium, high-strength electrical wires, a wide range of surface treatment technologies, as well as powders for additive technologies.

The most important task of the Institute is to develop its human resources, attract highly qualified specialists and talented graduates of Russian universities. Currently, the Institute employs more than 100 specialists with academic degrees, and their number grows every year.

I believe that corporate science provides an opportunity to expand the footprint of domestic nuclear power engineering products. These efforts include offering the competitive high-tech products.
